(3rd revision 2/7/95 - fixes error in CONFIG.SYS PROTMAN.DOS line - sorry)
How To Set Up Lantastic 6.0 for Network INT14 Logins
(or at least how it worked for me)
Only LANTASTIC VERSION 6.0 will support IPX LAN LOGINS! 5.x will NOT! If
you are using the older AE2x NIC's from Artisoft you MUST rejumper them to
put them into NE2000 compatible mode. Also, ALL Servers & Workstations on
your network must be changed to IPX/NDIS or they won't talk to each other.
Make sure your network is running properly in "normal" Lantastic 6.0 peer to
peer mode. Once that is setup you will need to extract the rest of the files
manually from the Lantastic install disks (or if you have an install resource
set up on a hard drive you can get it from there) to get NDIS/IPX support.
If you are running "NE2000" compatible cards you will need to find a copy of
NE2000.EXE. This is widely available and is probably posted here on the BBS.
Once you are running a complete lantastic peer-peer network you need the
following additional files to support TBBS 2.3 net logins (all of which,
except NE2000, are (well hidden) right on the Lant 6.0 disks).
NE2000.EXE (for NE2000 compatible cards)
or
NRODI.EXE (for Noderunner cards)
(If you are using other cards - Intel, SMC etc, they have their own drivers
to replace NE2000.EXE and ODINSUP.COM)
PROTMAN.DOS
PROTMAN.EXE
LSL.COM
IPXODI.COM
ODINSUP.COM
AI-NDIS.EXE
NET.CFG (a text file which goes in root directory)
PROTOCOL.INI (in the lantastic directory)
To get these files from your Lantastic distribution disks install your DISK
number 1, log into it's drive and type INSTALL/EXTRACT/DOS. Select *BOTH*
LIST OF ADAPTER DRIVERS *and* LANTASTIC NOVELL WORKSTATION CLIENT files and
hit enter. From the LIST OF ADAPTER DRIVERS select AEX NDIS SUPPORT FOR
ARTISOFT ADAPTERS. All the above files (except NE2000.EXE) will be extracted
to the directory you chose.
Normal Lantastic startup batch file (before IPX) looks like this:
AEX (or NEX000 for NE2000 cards or NR.EXE for NODERUNNER cards)
AILANBIO
REDIR
SERVER
You need to make the following modifications for IPX support.
In config.sys add the following line (actually INSTALL will do it for you):
DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C\LANTASTI
Your autoexec.bat (or startnet.bat) should be changed to look like this:
LSL
NE2000 (replaces NEX000 or AEX.COM)
- or -
NRODI.COM (replaces NR.EXE)
IPXODI A (the "A" switch reduces memory useage)
ODINSUP
AI-NDIS BIND_TO=NE2000 RECEIVE_BUFFERS=4 NO_RECEIVE_HOLDOFF
AILANBIO
REDIR <MACHINE NAME>
SERVER (if you are installing a server)
There will also be a file called NET.CFG extracted that needs to be slightly
modified. As it comes it looks like:
PROTOCOL ODINSUP
BUFFERED
PROTOCOL IPXODI
BIND #1
LINK DRIVER NRODI (if you are using NODERUNNER cards)
-OR-
LINK DRIVER NE2000 (for NE2000 compatible cards)
FRAME ETHERNET_802.2
FRAME ETHERNET_II
FRAME ETHERNET_SNAP
FRAME ETHERNET_802.3
; add the following 2 lines
PORT 300 <------ this is the I/O port your NE2000 is using
INT 10 <------ this is the IRQ your card is using
Make sure all the above support files are in your \LANATASTI directory. If
you are using other NIC's (INTEL, SMC etc) the installation is the same
except you must use their ODI support files to replace ODINSUP & NE2000.
All these files require a MUCH LARGER memory useage then your "normal"
Lantastic setup so it is almost a MUST to load much of this high. I get
consistent 43000 cps xfer rates across my small (3 station) network using
Qmodem Pro (DOS).
